Is Education truly the Key?

There is no question as to the inherent benefit of educating an individual. Education is enshrined in the Namibian Constitution and in no small is considered under Article 15 (Children's rights) and Article 20 (Education). Under Article 23, education is considered important and any hindrance is considered to result in a "disadvantaged" individual.

However, according to the World Bank, worldwide some 15.4% of youth (Aged 15 - 24) are unemployed. For Namibia, the numbers are even more stark with the statistics listed as 39.5% for the same group. What should be noted is that these are the youth in the Senior High - Undergrad phase of life and even more concerning that these figures are pre-#Covid19 impacts.

Using the figures above, one can be forgiven to think that the #Namibia figures are higher because it is from a developing country. However, this is not so as some 20% of those within the labour force (The Namibia Labour Force Survey 2018 Report - page 62) are unemployed. This therefore begs the question "Is Education truly the Key"?

While this topic requires more extensive investigation for us to comment further, the matter in the face of the "new normal" will need urgent attention.
